So, you’ve decided to hire a professional life coach to help you take the steps toward your dream. High five, fist bump and pat on the back! Now, who are you going to hire?
Professional life coaches are trained and certified to help you enhance your career, your confidence, make a big transition, change your eating habits, open a new business, form better relationships, help you stay accountable for your goals, find your passion, and so much more.
When hiring a life coach for your specific circumstances, it’s important that you and your coach are a good match for one another. Life coaches do specialize. So, an initial conversation to determine compatibility is essential.
If you are looking to start a new business, you will want to hire a coach who has success in business start-ups. Maybe you are looking for a new career and don’t know how to start. Again, you will want to determine if the specific coach has a proven track record for career coaching. You get the picture.
Let’s start at the beginning. How do you begin to look for a professional coach?
- Get referrals from trusted friends and family, just as you would if looking for a doctor, mechanic, plumber, or massage therapist.
- Conduct online searches through Google and Yelp – they show reviews.
- Look to online coaching directories – a simple internet search will provide them.
Once you have found a few good prospects, set up an initial interview with each of them. This is generally a 15–30-minute conversation and is usually free. First and foremost, remember that you are the one hiring them, not the other way around.
- Ask them about their area(s) of focus
- Find out how long have they been coaching
- What is their approach to coaching and what tools/techniques do they employ
- Have them describe an example of coaching success they have experienced
- Determine if the coaching is in-person or virtual
- Ask about their training as a coach
- Is there any follow-up after the coaching period
- What are their expectations of YOU as the client
- What is their fee structure and do they offer packages
- Ask for references
Once you have consulted with each of your prospects, take time to go over the data you have collected before making your choice. This process will help you get the most out of your coaching experience. You don’t want to waste time and money with someone who is not a good fit – especially if you are in the groove of making a life change.
As a life coach in San Antonio, Texas, I always appreciate that initial conversation with a potential new client. I love to see if I can help them make their dreams come true. And, I’m honest if I don’t believe I am a good fit for them. Because I belong to a community of excellent professional coaches, I can often make a referral.
