Is it realistic to think you can be happy during a pandemic?

That was the question floating through my brain as I sat at my desk feeling sorry for myself and the state that all other businesses are in today. It’s not news to you or me that businesses are struggling to survive with the ever-growing numbers of people testing positive for COVID19.

Then that famous children’s song popped into my head; If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. It got me thinking, could singing that song, and clapping your hands actually change how you are feeling? Could something as simple as singing that song actually flip the switch on your emotions and cause you to stop feeling unhappy and hopeless and instead feel lighter, happier, even a bit more hopeful?

Na, I doubt it!

But I decided to try it.

Before I started singing, I took a happiness rating. A rating between 1 and 10, where 1 is the lowest on the feeling happy scale and 10 is the highest. My happiness rating came in at a 4. I wasn’t particularly unhappy. It was closer to apathetic.

Then I started singing the song. You remember how it goes, right?

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. (clap, clap)

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. (clap, clap)

If you’re happy and you know it, then for your face will surely show it.

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. (clap, clap)

Then you move on– if you’re happy and you know it stomp your feet, shout hooray, do all three!

Three rounds of singing, stomping and shouting hooray and I was out of the doldrums and into happiness. My happiness rating went from a 4 to an 8. Not too shabby of an improvement.

Singing, clapping, stomping, and shouting may sound kind of silly, but what do you have to lose? You’re more than likely at home working remotely, and not in a crowded office. But, even if you are in the office, who cares? If it makes you feel better, I say, Just Do It!

Stop allowing the pandemic to decide how you are going to feel and be. You have a choice! It’s time you choose to feel and be happy.
