“Endless possibilities. Yeah, right!” Susie said with sarcasm in her voice. “That may have been true when I was in my 20’s, but there is not a shred of evidence that statement is true now that I’m in my late 40’S.”
I had asked a simple question, What are the possibilities for you right now? My heart sank to hear her express such hopelessness. Had she surrendered to the belief that she was powerless to have anything in her life be different or better than it was at that moment? It made me sad to think so.
I sat for a moment and wondered what happened to all the hopes and dreams she had had as a younger person.
Our conversation continued as we sipped our coffee. I asked, When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Immediately, a grin came across her face. She said with a chuckle, “I wanted to be a social worker in the foster care system, so I could help kids who have come from tough environments like the one I came from.”
I thought that was an admirable goal. Who else would know what those kids think and feel better than someone who came through the system? But a social worker hadn’t been her career so far. Instead of following her dream, she had been jumping from job to job for years. And she was still eight credits short of an Associate’s Degree.
Susie has a lot in common with many folks I meet. Somewhere along the line of their life, they lost hope and inspiration for the thing they most wanted to do. They either got talked out of pursuing the goal, or other events in their lives popped up, like marriage, children, ill parents, and their dreams got sidelined. Then just as the kids go off to college or caring for parents is no longer necessary, they take a look around and think that it is too late for them to go after their goals.
I’m here to tell you that it’s not too late. No matter where you are on your life’s journey, there is still time to pursue your dream.
Here are three steps you need to take to set you on the path to pursuing your dream.
- Redefine your goal. What specifically do you want to create or contribute?
- Identify and release the limiting beliefs that tell you that you’re too old, not smart enough, aren’t physically capable, etc.
- Take one small action that will move you closer to your desired goal – research, interview someone in the field, read articles or books on the subject, sign up for a class.
If you need help identifying and releasing the limiting beliefs that keep you from taking action on your life-long goal or passion, give me a call. I can help!
