I love science!
When it comes to feeling overwhelmed by negative emotions, there’s a lot of science involved.
Our repetitive negative thoughts cause a sequence of unseen events to occur within our bodies. Each time we think a negative or limiting thought about ourselves or another, we release a series of chemicals into our bloodstream. These chemical messengers, called neuropeptides, surge through our body searching for compatible receptors to hook up to. After a suitable receptor is found, they hook up and lock on. Once they’ve locked on, a chemical interaction occurs. It’s like turning a key, causing a change to the structure of that cell.
When the structure of the cell changes, it sends a message to the entire body, causing it to respond in any number of ways. You might notice a surge of adrenaline causing you to want to fight or flee. Or you might notice your legs and hands shaking in response to a perceived threat.

What I want you to know is that negative thoughts cause negative emotions, and they can both lead to negative physical symptoms. Yes! They are that powerful. Headaches, stomach issues, fatigue, joint pain-are all physical manifestations of negative thoughts.
What to do? Here’s how I guide my clients to begin.
- First, you have to realize what you are doing to yourself through your negative thoughts. See it.
- Then, identify the negative thoughts. What are you telling yourself? Own it.
- Finally, replace your negative thoughts with positive ones. Change it. I can help.
