What’s Your Relationship with Money?

Step back in time with me, to the place where the trending colors of the day were avocado green and rich gold, and shag carpet was all the rage.

Yes! That was the scene as I stood over an ironing board with each one of the paper bills I had earned from babysitting laid out across the board. As I waited for the iron to heat up, I basked in the glory of seeing all those bills lined up in neat rows, each waiting to receive the hot iron that would remove their imperfect wrinkles and restore them to their original glory.

At that stage in my life, I appreciated every dollar I earned. I had reverence for them. Fast forward to my college years when I worked as a cocktail and food server – that’s when I got a little sloppy with my bills. It wasn’t unusual for me to stuff a wad of bills into my apron as I cleared a table. No longer did I take the time to lay them out flat, all facing the same direction.

Then one day, I learned an important lesson about my relationship with money. How you treat your money is representative of how you treat everything in your life and what you’ll receive in return. That is, if you treat money irreverently – with a lack of respect – then that is what you get in return.

Think about it this way. You’re in a romantic relationship. If you treat your partner with less than reverence – respect – that is what you will get in return. And, you will not have that relationship for long.

The same can be said regarding your relationship with money. Treat your money poorly and you will not have it for long.

Instead, treat your money like a lover. Honor it. Respect it. Appreciate it. Love it. And it will respond accordingly.

Stay tuned for more about our relationships with money. There is so much more to explore on this topic and I can’t wait to share it with you.
